NEW! Young Hospitalists
For the first time, the Annual Meeting presents a track dedicated to the “Future of SHM,” new hospitalists, residents and medical students. Inspired by SHM Past President Eric Howell’s vision to increase the hospital medicine “pipeline,” clinician-educators have created six sessions dedicated to meet the needs of this next wave of hospitalists. Session topics include Time Management, Writing Your CV, Being the Best Applicant You Can Be and more.

NEW! The Doctor-Patient Relationship
As service is a quality outcome, this new track is dedicated to giving front-line hospitalists practical skills for success in enhancing the doctor-patient relationship and information on what to do when the therapeutic relationship fails. Breakout sessions being covered include What to Do if You Get Sued, How to Run a Family Meeting, Effective Communication Strategies and Facilitating End-of-Life Discussions.

NEW! Medical Education
This one-day track is designed strictly with the clinician-educator hospitalist in mind. There are three high-yield sessions for this important audience … by star clinician-educators … for clinical educators. Breakout sessions being covered include Teaching in the Hospital, How to Give a Great Talk and Update in Medical Education.

Rapid Fire
The Rapid Fire Track is designed to provide participants with “rapid bursts” of content and to address specific questions framed by the Annual Meeting Committee. The topics are very clinical and relevant to everyday inpatient practice and include Update in Pulmonary and Critical Care and Neurologic Emergencies.

Pediatric
The Pediatric Track focuses on pediatric hospitalist practice management as well as current clinical issues encountered by pediatric hospitalists. Thought-provoking issues such as Hospital Management of Patients Presenting with ALTE, Management of Febrile Infants and Common Clinical Conundrums are addressed in the breakout sessions.

Potpourri
The Potpourri Track offers presentations on a variety of non-clinical topics of interest to the practicing hospitalist. Topics include My Smartphone Went to Medical School, History of Medicine, The Conundrum with Healthcare Reform and Non-Evidence-Based Medicine: Things We Do for No Reason.

Practice Management
The importance of organizational infrastructure related to the practice of hospital medicine is well recognized. The topics in this track include Hospitalists and Observation Care, Virtual Care in the Acute Setting, Innovative Hospitalist Staffing Models and Case Studies in Improving Patient Experience.

Quality
The Quality Track is offered to address the imperatives around the development and implementation of improvement efforts in the hospital. Practical sessions cover such areas as MARQUIS, BOOSTing Care Transitions, Using and Improving CPOE at Your Hospital and Choosing Wisely®.

Workshops
Back by popular demand! Workshop topics were submitted by members, underwent a peer review and were selected based on their relevancy to hospitalists. Submission categories include clinical, evidence-based medicine, research, academic, practice management, and quality and safety.
